Okay, so I was just scrolling through my usual movie news feeds this morning, and I saw something that totally threw me for a loop. A couple of sites were talking about “The Black Phone 2” as if it’s a confirmed thing, with a release date and everything. My first thought was, “Wait, did I miss a huge announcement” I’m a massive fan of the first movie—the way it blended that 70s vibe with a genuinely scary supernatural story just worked for me.
But then I started digging a little deeper, and now I’m just confused, and I figured this was the best place to figure out what’s real and what’s not. Let’s break this down. The first *The Black Phone* was a surprise hit, right It made a ton of money, and that ending with Finney escaping and Robin seemingly gone but maybe not.
it felt pretty final, but also left a tiny thread you could pull on. So, of course, talks of a sequel started almost immediately. Scott Derrickson, the director, and Ethan Hawke have been asked about it a bunch.
From what I’ve pieced together from recent interviews, it seems like they *are* working on something, but it’s not a direct sequel. The news I saw made it sound like “The Black Phone 2: Finney’s Revenge” was greenlit, but that’s not the case. From what I can tell, the project in development is being called a “spin-off” or a “new chapter.
” It’s supposedly focusing on a new victim of The Grabber. This makes a lot of sense to me. Ethan Hawke’s character is dead, and Finney’s story had a clear, satisfying conclusion. Going back to that same well might ruin the power of the first film.
But a new story set in that same universe, maybe even in the same town during that same era That has potential. It could eplore the lore of the black phone itself. How did it get there Does it only help kids in that specific basement, or is it a thing that happens in other places of great evil This is where I start to have questions, and I’m really curious what you all think.
If it’s a new victim, does that mean we’re getting an entirely new cast I can’t imagine a *Black Phone* movie without Ethan Hawke, but his character is very, very dead. Would he maybe appear in flashbacks or as a ghost Or is the franchise moving on completely from The Grabber And what about the tone A huge part of what made the first film work for me was the balance of sheer terror with the heart of the story—the sibling bond between Finney and Gwen, and the support from the other ghost kids. If you take that away, does it just become another generic horror movie I remember watching the first one and being so impressed with how they handled the supernatural element.
It wasn’t just a cheap jump-scare device. The phone and the ghosts were a crucial part of the puzzle, giving Finney the tools to survive. It was a story about resilience and the collective strength of past victims.
If they make a sequel with a new kid, they have to find a way to replicate that emotional core without just copying it. Maybe it’s a kid who is more isolated, with no sister on the outside trying to find him That would create a completely different dynamic. And let’s talk about the 70s setting.
That was such a character in the first film. The grainy look, the cars, the clothes, the fact that kids could just roam around and disappear. it all added to the pervasive dread. Do you think they’ll keep that, or will they try to modernize it A big part of the original’s charm was that it felt like a lost film from that era.
Putting a smartphone in that basement would completely change the mechanics of the story. The isolation was key, and it’s harder to achieve that now. I also have to be honest, I’m a little worried about the “spin-off” idea.
We’ve all seen franchises milk a good idea until it’s bone dry. *The Black Phone* felt unique and self-contained. The thought of it becoming a “Conjuring”-style universe with multiple sequels and spin-offs kind of worries me.
Sometimes, less is more in horror. The mystery of the phone is part of what makes it scary. Eplaining too much could ruin the magic. Do you think this new project is a genuine creative etension, or is it just a cash grab because the first one was a financial success I guess what I’m trying to get at is this: I’m ecited by the possibility of more stories in this world, but I’m also nervous.
The bar is set really high. I want to hear what you all have heard. Has anyone seen any concrete, official news from Blumhouse or Universal Are the original writers and Scott Derrickson confirmed to be involved And more importantly, what would *you* want to see in a follow-up A completely new story, or something that somehow connects back to Finney and Gwen Let’s try to piece this all together because the news out there is seriously all over the place.
